Job description: The British Embassy in Abu Dhabi has a vacancy for an Economic Officer, job grade Executive Officer (EO). This is for a fixed-term contract of three (3) years.This is an exciting opportunity to use economic and people skills to contribute to the UK’s understanding of the UAE economy and to help deliver economic opportunity for the UK and UAE – driving key UK government priorities.The role covers Abu Dhabi with thematic focuses including energy, wealth, diversification and third countries but the role is very varied. The role has elements of desk-based analysis and policy advice for decision-makers in London, but it is important the successful applicant is comfortable meeting and developing contacts to garner insights and potentially to influence. Key stakeholders include government, the private sector, academia and other embassies. The role will work alongside a multidisciplinary team of economists, energy, climate, science, political and communications experts and support wider embassy activities such as UK ministerial visits, projects and organise or attend high profile events.The successful candidate will have a good understanding of economics, strong people skills, an ability to work well with others and be able to provide quality, timely advice.The job is based in Abu Dhabi, some travel to Dubai may be required per work demands.The British Government is an inclusive and diversity-friendly employer. - Support the UK Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office; Department for Business and Trade (DBT); Department for Energy Security and Net Zero (DESNZ) and other government departments boost UK prosperity;
- Use engagement with interlocutors to support UK policy;
- Provide high quality analysis, advice, and reporting to UK stakeholders on UAE developments as well as the UAE’s economic relationships with third countries;
- Respond to UK government enquiries, providing accurate information and high quality insights to the Foreign Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) and wider cross-government economic priorities, including supporting the Embassy Political Team on political economy work and understanding the economic impact of regional developments;
- Develop an accessible collection of core economic analysis to support Embassy colleagues in their work;
- Attend conferences and meetings with experts.
- Create and maintain a strong network of national and international contacts to progress our engagement;
- Support projects funded by the UK embassy to deliver our economic goals;
- Support official embassy visits e.g. by UK ministers or senior civil servants, and events.

Essential qualifications, skills and experience
- A university degree, or demonstrable equivalent level knowledge, in economics or related field.
- Excellent communications skills, including fluency in both written and spoken English.
- A confident communicator with excellent interpersonal skills and proven ability to engage at all levels internally and with external stakeholders professionally.
- Demonstrates ability to gather, analyse, and report on information related to political, foreign policy, and economic issues.
- Ability to think strategically to spot opportunities.
- Flexible approach, strong initiative, and adaptability to changing UK priorities.
- Ability to work independently, as well as being able to work well with others, with strong organisation skills.
- Proficiency in using Microsoft Office applications (Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
Desirable qualifications, skills and experience
- Previous experience of working in the Middle East
- Arabic language skills.

No accommodation and relocation expenses are payable in connection with this position.This role is for a full-time employment, on a fixed term contract basis for three (3) year, subject to six (6) months’ probationary period.The Embassy is open from Monday to Friday from 0700 to 1800 hrs. The Employee’s normal weekly working hours are forty (40) Monday to Friday (inclusive). This is inclusive of one-hour paid rest break for each five (5) hours worked; the timing of the rest break shall be approved by the Employee’s Line Manager and in accordance with operational requirements.Whilst the role is be based in Abu Dhabi, the jobholder will be required to visit the Embassy in Dubai occasionally. The jobholder will be required to be flexible in their approach to hours worked as these will be dictated by operational needs and will involve working out of hours (evening and/ or weekends) during meetings and events.The Embassy has an active Learning and Development Committee, and the whole of Post is committed to providing the time and resources for staff to develop personally and professionally.
